Let’s be honest, people that care about me should tell me what’s up. I can woddle my way into the truth or people can help me out. A direct conversation can save years of heartache. Not everyone has the right words to say to each other but it’s likely somewhere on the earth somebody does. When we throw up walls between each other and sit in self righteous indignation souls are lost. Silence can cost lives. No organization should use silence as their entry mechanism. People that throw up road blocks in my life are not helping. Years of this shit on my life is enough. Years of the pain you all have caused my family is enough. If you have something to say to me say it, don’t push me around sideways because it can cost lives. There are more than direct ways to say things and I understand that. It does not cancel the need for direct conversation. If you have a problem with me say it.
If you keep your child at home they might be protected but lives might be lost by the lives they could have influenced for the better. If you let your child in the world they could save lives, take lives, or be taken. Life is rolling the dice. Given that fact and that everyone in it is rolling the dice, not instilling forgiveness, mercy, and reconciliation is a mistake. I have been beaten, drugged, and terrorized. Had my situations shifted without my consent. I am still alive until God takes me. Each day is a new day and everyone deserves more chances while they are breathing. Forgiveness and reconciliation usually requires taking a hit on pride and protectionism. Forgive someone they might come back to bite you later. Don’t and someone else still might. God is in control and petty squabbles might make us miss the axe above our head. Forgive and reconcile quickly. Tomorrow is not gaurunteed and festering anger can scale up problems for everyone. The Bible teaches this, sometimes it is hard to related to words spoken years ago
Don’t confuse my ability to put up with shit as me liking it. I do like attitude. Not shitty attitude. Attitude that lets people speak up when they know something isn’t right, attitude that tells me where I am wrong, attitude that lets people not be afraid to show who they really are, attitude that protects the little guy when no one else will, attitude that refrains from saying what they could to protect someone. Attitude that saves, attitude that fights for the better for all. If we demonize people for the pitches they miss, they stop stepping up to the plate. I like home runs. I like goals. I like touchdowns. I like people working together to help solve each other’s problems. Probably best to keep people in the loop so you don’t step on each other’s toes. It is nice to make things a surprise sometimes that said well meaning people’s individual actions can be in the right place and the combination can have unintended side effects.
Younger generations don’t always have this wisdom. This world is tough and when you are fighting to survive gaining wisdom isn’t always the primary goal. It is imperative on people that have wisdom to share it with each other and for those that listen to help find a way to speak it to others in the community. Not out of judgement and condemnation, not from a high horse of moral superiority, but humility and love. I understand the want not to overburden and sometimes a light touch is not enough. If people don’t think you care about them wisdom is muted. If you are going to drink leave the keys at home. Excessive drinking wrecks relationships and causes people to say things and make decisions they wish they hadn’t. If you prevent a man from achieving his goals he might turn to the bottle. Don’t toy with on and off relationships, you are nobodies doormat. Don’t modulate each others support networks, misery lies down that path. Don’t put your faith in the wrong people, you might not know their situation – so don’t have your life be a product of their control. Call people on their shit. Thank God for unanswered prayers – though my heart kind of half believes that one. How do we claim to care about people when we are supposed to be cool with them leaving our lives. I am glad it didn’t work out, I am not sure we could have been friends, and I lost a friend. Something being good and dark at the same time. Fighting for ones country is beautiful and honorable and seeing your friends die or suffer life long injuries from a war isn’t pretty – or so I imagine not ever experiencing war myself. My war was trying to speak up when being made out to be crazy, and trying to survive the storm of being on the street. Having my status constantly shifted all while having some of the people I wanted by my side never give me the time of day. I try to imagine the best, covert operations that prevented people from having real conversations with me, and at the end of the day I am still alone. On the plus side, someone that never trusted me enough to tell me the truth could have never made me truly happy. Don’t make someone the tool of a ten year long investigation without speaking with them directly. One person disappearing hurts, people disappearing over and over really hurts. People on the sidelines matter too. The job isn’t done if their life is left in shambles. Can’t rewrite the past but we can try and repair it where we have failed.
If you are given two options that aren’t right and have enough time, find a side door. Planning in advance saves lives. We don’t always have enough time and if I failed I am sorry for that. Being beaten like a piñata made me untrusting and I waited a little too long.
I don’t need to be President. I hope some of the words I have been inspired to write have a positive effect. God, The Bible, tons of artwork (including various industries and sports), and my life experiences all contribute. Hopefully it is a light to someone out there.
Let me first say I think you are beautiful and I don’t have all the answers. I am far from perfect, and I am the product of a broken support network. I have been unfairly labeled as mentally ill for trying to tell the truth. I wanted to share my thoughts though they might be annoying.
My first thought would be bulimia. Doesn’t mean it is the right thought. People that are closer to the situation probably have better insight. How to actually help when people don’t want help is difficult. How to help when support networks can’t be trusted is difficult. Is it wiser in this case not to get involved? Possibly. Getting involved might be the right choice and at the same time have a potential for backlash. Hope she has a father that is looking out for her. The way she talks seems more interested in discrediting the comments than explaining her body type is different. This seems to be a cause for concern. Could also be lack of resources or addiction. Could be factors that I can’t comprehend.
Now if I posted this comment would I add value or subtract? Her words say keep the conversation open but her tone sounds like she doesn’t want discussion. “Remember my door is always open, please shut it on your way out.” – Better Off Ted
So maybe the first comment should be? Do you have a support network you can trust? If she doesn’t is she going to say she doesn’t? Probably not. If she thinks she could have one would she want one. I would think so, who doesn’t want people they can truly trust in their life? Some are burned and jaded so badly they might think they are past positive interactions. How do people add value to that? I don’t have the answer to that, maybe someone that has been through it would be better equipped to discuss. This mentality by the masses fuels apathy. Apathy by the masses reinforces the jade. Damned if you do damned if you don’t, possibly. Those that lack humility and would prefer to harbor resentment are more easily jaded. No reconciliation and no forgiveness equals no peace. Who really wants to tell someone that is already hurting and jaded this? Would someone that truly cares about her omit this? No.
This is like pulling out a tooth that is infected without novicane. Temporary pain could save a life. Though depending on the backlash could be incredibly hurtful. “Right or happy, take your pick“

If working in the proper channels leaves you in the thick of it is it not reasonable to expect people to resort to improper channels? Can’t really follow your dreams without healthcare. I am not this countries pen and paper. We don’t rob people’s healthcare because we don’t agree with them. The evil exists for a reason, and evil people can take advantage of this. Corruption corrupts. Execuses for excusing a man.
When you are tested enough, you might chalk the real up to another test. See the problem? Less support equals more problems. More tribes should mean more support and not more division. The appearance of an agency that can support and actually can’t support creates more problems than it solves. Defunding the police likely ends with the appearance of a support network that can help when in fact it cannot. Oppression in policing creates the exact same problem. So the answer is remove corruption and fund the police. A merciless system is oppressive and therefore corrupt. A problem shifts from being a problem for the few to a problem for the masses. A big problem we face is those that control the tics control the system. That is oppression. When withholding support healthcare and otherwise is used as a weapon, we all suffer.

Why are no candidates talking about how we can help China during a pandemic? They save countless lives with all the money they lone us and when shit hits the fan we blame them. WTF?
Canada has too long of lines in public healthcare. Maybe instead of throwing out the idea we use American Engineering and know how to help make it better. They profit we profit we all profit. I like Democrats care about the poor and the environment and want good healthcare for all. I like that Republicans are Pro Life and help promote business.
Human life is more valuable than money and too valuable to lose to abortion.
The death penalty should be done away with. There is a time to kill – not after a threat has been neutralized. There are 100+ ways to fix a problem without ending a life and we need great minds working together to actually solve problems.
Society has a propensity for devaluing some in society. We need this to stop. Think this is from Better Off Ted, everyone is someone’s child or mother or father. We need to promote this in every way in society. God has given us all gifts and different pieces of the puzzle. A puzzle with missing pieces is not fun.
Current parties are creating division and strife in a world that needs to work together to make life better for all. The acknowledgment that this could easily fall into hubris needs to be noted. Even if we don’t fly too close to the sun that doesn’t mean future generations will not. The acknowledgment that problems and serious problems can occur and should be guarded against is not a sign of weakness and taking that into account we choose to press forward.
Healthcare is a basic necessity for a fair playing field. We invest in roads but we don’t invest in the health of the people that drive on those roads? Their lives and the lives of others are more valuable than the roads they drive on. Good roads and infrastructure are things we can all benefit from. Technology and cyber security are the roads of the future and should be safe for all to drive on.
We don’t strive to hurt or demean our enemies. We do everything in our power to help magnify the good and help give them a road forward from the bad. We don’t make those that disagree with us out to be crazy or resort to destructive tactics to hamstring them.
We don’t strive for war yet to protect others from genocide or oppressive destruction we will use every tool in our arsenal. The sword should be the last tool and even then zip ties and a van transport to a prison is preferable. We will give our enemies the benefit of the doubt that they have been brainwashed and might not have had an easy way out. Life is precious, even one life lost can dramatically change history. So if we can do anything to save them we do it. We also need to constantly check the oppression in our own system. Delivering someone from one oppressive brainwashing to society does not make better people. We help people achieve their full potential while protecting others. This is vital for breaking the cycle.
We don’t devalue our country and don’t fail to acknowledge where it has failed. Slavery and Imperialism has cost lives and caused unimaginable human suffering. We have also helped stop genocides and saved many precious lives. Being able to see where we have been helps us better understand how to move forward. Our society has done great things and terrible things. Magnify the good and repair the bad to the best of our ability moving forward. The one in the ghetto, the one in the country, the one in the skyscraper, the one on the boat scrapping to get by and get here we love and value. We all work together and our children can see that by working past our differences to move forward together we can achieve far more than going to war with each other.
I realize the Jurassic Park reference here. By protecting everyone we could be allowing TRex DNA to be a potential in the future. My hope is great and humble people of the future will be able to account for this.
Healthcare is more important than intellectual property. Those that venture into medical technology should be driven by solving the worlds problems and not driving a profit. We as people should reward and promote those that aspire in this way. I don’t like becoming useless because of new technologies so as society changes people like myself need a way forward. That does not mean we should prevent technologies that could solve problems for the world from being easily accessible to all. We have the ability to make 3D prints now and my teeth are terrible. This should not be. If we sit on technologies that can save lives blood is on our hands.
How many good ideas lost because of bad money and bad people in production lines? How many good ideas because someone different wasn’t allowed a voice at the table? A gay man, a middle eastern woman, the guy nobody paid attention to in Russia, the enuich, the list goes on and on.
Some regulations that help protect lives in the short term can destroy more in the long term. What happened to the Elio? A high MPG car that can help save the environment. Why do people not rally around good ideas to help each other out? We claim to aspire to a God that loves people. Why is that not what I see? We can make excuses all day long of why people are unfit or unworthy for knowledge. We can leverage good ideas to limit others. Who wants engineers feeling broken and forgotten? Or anyone for that matter? Just because one person doesn’t have all the ideas doesn’t make them any less valuable to have at the table. Want people to believe in God? Fix this shit. How many people just decide fuck it, why should I help a society that doesn’t want my voice at the table. How many people have said this to me directly? None directly, maybe because their voices were extinguished from the table. How many fires set as roadblocks? Christians that leave their brother in silence. Maybe oppression is why nobody speaks up. We claim to be better. USA greatness and USA pride are inversely proportional. Pride and Greed prevents us from acknowledging our faults. It is not to say The USA can’t be a light to the world. We can do some amazing things we just have to realize that protecting our image doesn’t always protect us. Protecting ourselves and letting the world suffer isn’t protecting us. Maybe if our politicians didn’t have tics and bloat ware installed without their permission, they could govern effectively. The truth? Pride and protectionism gets our brothers and sisters killed all over the world.

I see no need for the death penalty. Everyone eventually dies, and to be truly just the society that helped make the monster would have to be held to account. Seeing as I am not God and can’t see everything, I couldn’t justly take another’s life. An unarmed man in a prison cell could be dangerous but that is why guards have weapons.
So no executions approved, not for the man on death row, not for the baby in the womb, not for the man or woman contemplating suicide. God decides when people die, not us. Death is permanent, life is full of possibilities. We have a responsibility to fill those possibilities with Hope and not blott out the sun. Tell people where they are wrong and don’t use that as an excuse not to help them back up. Protect each other. Judgement and answers go ass to ass. More judgement equals less answers. Pride lends itself to judgement. Answers save time and lives. Do you want to know why or do you want to possibly see the wrong person suffer for what you don’t understand. Unless your ready to die by the same oppression they faced or mistakes of your own life, don’t be willing to take an unarmed man’s life. Death penalty is eye for eye at best. At worse it is taking an innocent person’s life. If the world were full of angels and a perfect system there would be many less bodies in the ground. A barbaric system isn’t a light or example for anyone.
For those hurting, I always need another friend and remember you are not alone. Having multiple women while another man has none doesn’t really seem fair. Being put on hold for a woman like a stapler isn’t fair either (Better Off Ted) – she doesn’t really want me but she doesn’t like the idea of someone else banging around on me. Making multiple woman share one car doesn’t seem wise. Though I suppose sharing is caring. Can’t blame people for making do with what they have or finding creative ways to combat an oppressive system. My guess is those systems might lend itself more to the temporary. Keeping one woman happy is difficult.
Our society lights men’s crotches up and sticks them in cages without shower curtains. Fixing that oppression seems more valuable than throwing up road blocks to gay marriages. Yes I believe God intended marriage to be between a man and a woman. No if I were gay I wouldn’t want someone making the cake for my wedding that didn’t want to make it and hasn’t seen the same level of oppressions I have seen in society. Don’t underplay corporate mistakes and environmental factors in adding to that. Sometimes fixing a problem causes more problems than it solves. So I would prefer to live and let live and keep the government out of people’s bedrooms. I believe in the case of abortion unborn lives should be protected. I do believe there are cases that a woman live is endangered and should be left in the hands of doctors. The guiding principle should be to protect life. I do believe law should set an example. So if killing unborn is legal the option might seem viable. I don’t believe this way on homosexuality. I believe saving lives is more important than telling someone who they can sleep with. Combining killing unborn with making the choice necessary to save a pregnant woman’s life into one word is not right. Obfuscation can allow evil to exists. Important to remember though that even if we fix one side of an equation it doesn’t mean The Devil won’t try the other side. If The Devil can’t keep killing the unborn he might try and scale up oppression against mothers who made a mistake. So a Society that outcasts a pregnant woman will be held to account for the part they play. Not trying to encourage unwanted pregnancies. Once a mistake is made we learn from it and move forward together in love. Society plays a role in all of this. I like bikinis and lingerie though they can be advertising to bad choices. I don’t want woman feeling like they have to wear head scarves if they don’t want to either. Modesty shouldn’t be looked down upon. I can understand if people want to keep their shining star for themselves. Too many contenders can block each other out.
I wish our news channels had local broadcasts for national news. How can we say elections are fair if people have to pay to stay informed.
The same thing that applies to a baby applies to the person on death row. Due to the storm of life they haven’t achieved all God meant them to be. An oppressive society try’s to tell them they are no longer valuable. They give them excuses for why they are not good enough to live. Just like the person left in the dust or to freeze out in the wilderness. I will say if the fight for the unborn creates a revelation of something this beautiful, how can the child in the womb not add value to this world? Life is God’s love. If we had a better system how many lives could be saved. If just one, it would be worth it. Just because the story is still unwritten yet, doesn’t mean it is any less beautiful or valuable. Why give to an unknown orphanage of 3 stars? Because the place without 5 stars might need more help. Maybe I will never get to see the value I add, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Let’s make sure the forgotten and outcast isn’t a special club, where we have to be forgotten and outcast to join. He didn’t go through enough to be one of us and they will never talk to him if we do.
What does porn tell you about a man’s life? He isn’t perfect, perfect robots don’t need porn. Could he be a doctor trying to check up on the less fortunate, possibly. Does he have enough options in his life? Thinking the best in others my guess would be no. If people had better routes would porn be their first choice? Probably not. Stuck in a dessert waiting for battle is it wise to leave a person hard up for sex? My guess is no as well. Is he taking the low road when he should be taking the high road? Possibly. Are people putting up road blocks in his life? Probably. Is it natural for a man to want a wife and crave human interaction? Yes. Is virtual the best route? Depends. Is it right to wreck a mans life for the road block societies put in his way? No. If a society wants to get rid of someone they disagree with, could they put these roadblocks in his life intentionally? Wait you mean that happens, yes. Could virtual interactions leave more room for error than strip clubs? Yes. Do words in a virtual environment feel less hurtful than those in a non virtual environment? No. Could a virtual environment be used as a training simulation to get people hurt? Yes. Could a virtual environment be used as a training simulation to save lives? Yes. Technology is power, and power is technology.
Once we defeat the Nazi’s do we decide it’s our turn to get ours? Or do we chalk it up to a power crazed mad man that was pumped full of drugs and a society that let oppression win out over free speech. German Engineering is beautiful, you don’t stomp a beautiful flower after you have saved it from Tyranny. Doesn’t mean you don’t correct it where it went wrong. How many have died because of technologies? How many have lived because of technologies? Roman civilization murdered many. The Huns murdered many. We don’t punish future generations for the mistakes of the past. We learn from the past and we make the future better for all, not just some. Granted I say this from a position of oppression but there are others in much worse situations than me. They would probably have been pushed past their breaking point. We need to find a way to lead those back to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Though with some of what I have seen in the world I am not sure I would have the words without a lot of help from God. If I get pushed past my breaking point, please lead me back to seeing the light at the end of the day. Make it what it should have been, not the result of what has been. That is the God I believe in. A system that has no mercy or exceptions leads to oppression. An oppressive system is not fair. A system with too many exceptions collapses and reduces mercy for all. The idea that a system with exceptions is fair is contradictory. A system claims to be fair to appease the masses. “Nothing is scarier than a truly just man”. A system with balance must account for this. A group of people will realize that exceptions are given to few. Realizing the system has treated them unjustly will want to revolt. Safety nets to prevent people from getting too low are vital, not only because they help people but to prevent the rate at which this happens.

People that see inconsistencies will be more forgiving if they believe mercy will be the hand they are dealt as well. Those that have been dealt an unmerciful hand are likely to capitalize on this knowledge. Power generally has two options. Bring them into the fold or limit their capabilities. Bringing them in is a risk and leaving them out is a risk. Power might try to sow division in communications between groups of people they see as a threat. Even if the reality of a threat is unfounded power likes to predict. People that see a problem and can’t fix it might try to scale it up so the problem is addressed. Division is a tool to keep a working class. If everyone had the knowledge to be king everyone might want to be. If people are fighting each other and lack visibility power has more freedom to do what it wishes. True freedom can be power for good or power for evil. Most likely a bit of both.

It is likely the comments I am making are nothing new. These realizations are somewhat infuriating. Does wisdom make a person happier? Companies might release products that cause miscarriages and with the amount of lies and misinformation it could easily take a life or many. Sometimes an attempt to make society better can cost lives so being able to reassess a situation and change paths going forward is vital. There are sometimes obstacles to those changes for companies. Competition might also lie to get a product off the market so having authorities we can trust is vital. Pride and people being unable to forgive lends itself to people not wanting to change their opinions.

If we are too harsh on Doctors they might want to stop trying. If they are expected to always be perfect they might give up when they miss a pitch. We should train them the best we can and we need to give them love and mercy too. Eventually we all miss something if we are working hard. If we were all perfect there would be no need for grace and mercy. Do we give them fire for what they missed or water for everything they got right. Sometimes perfectionists are harder on themselves than others. That’s why they need more love and grace not less.

How do we help improve support networks without making people never want to try. Too high of expectations makes everyone want to save face. This prevents people from reconciling and problems in support networks from actually getting fixed. Powerful tools need good inputs, because a perfectly built system can be used for evil.

This will hopefully be the first post of several on different network connections. User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is defined by a Request for Comments (RFC) RFC 768. The purpose of this protocol is sending data across a network. Sending data across a network is like sending a letter in the mail. It requires an address and requires both the sender and receiver to have access to the delivery network.
Computers don’t have a physical address. They have a set of numbers called an IP Address as well as a Port. The IP Address tells the network which computer will receive a particular message. There are many applications that run on a computer as well, and more than one program can be networked. To be able to determine which application to send a message to the computer also has a Port number. Different applications bind to different port numbers so they can receive messages from the network.
User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is built on the idea that a network in potentially unreliable. Much like a message in the postal mail being lost, particular packets can be lost which is why we consider the networks unreliable. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a reliable method of communication but this protocol has a performance penalty and can slow things down in real time systems. Developers can create reliable protocols on top of UDP as well.
In computing we think of servers as computers or applications that will receive messages, process messages, and send us a response. Client generally means any application that connects to the server and sends a message, but generally doesn’t process other users requests. So while this is not always the case, generally speaking there is a many to one relation between clients and servers.
Server
Generally we need a server first. Someone listening to the request. Then we can create a client to send requests to the server. In computers there are many names for a process that stays active – process, background task, service, daemon process, thread etc. For creating a server we need a process that will stay in an active state of listening for messages. Much like someone watching a horizon for a smoke signal, once the server receives the message it will be able to process that message and possibly send a response to the return IP address of the client.
Below is an example of creating a UDP server in Java. The code launches a UDP Server thread that will listen on Port 7777. The method uses a threadpool to launch the server. Other UDP server threads with different ports could be launched on the same threadpool. The IP Address 127.0.0.1 is usually associated with localhost. Both of these example applications are on the same computer for testing. In a network scenario these IP addresses would need to be replaced with the IP addresses or the hostname would need to be resolved into an IP address so we could send the message to that computer.

Below creates a UDP server in Java configured to non-blocking input output (NIO). Non blocking input allows us to not leave the current thread or process idling while waiting to receive messages. Blocking threads can add value in situations where lots of data does not need to be processed quickly, and other ports or input can be processed as well within the same thread.

I hope this gives people a working starting example for UDP servers.
This is a bit of a tangent from my previous posts. I would like to note red tape, political processes, excessive concern with details, and reinventing processes to prevent others from being tricked into wasting time. In programming and development people can be very particular. Like artists developers sometimes think in the abstract and find themselves concentrating on the abstraction rather than the task in front of them.
Think about someone working on a car. They might need to do a simple task like repairing a belt. Developers sometimes see the way the belt was built, look at the engine and decide they don’t like the way things were done. In cars most people would understand changing an engine when a belt is broken is really not necessary. With the level of the abstractions developers deal with at times they sometimes think they can do better.
The Good
First I will speak to the good in this mindset. Many developers have created great frameworks for the community and have built tools that can make other developers lives easier, though at the same time introducing more layers into the equation. With all layers and abstractions in development there can be pros and cons. Good abstractions can let a developer focus on getting the task at hand done without adding excessive complexity. Bad abstractions can take power away from the developers and cause reliance on buggy systems that don’t always act in expected ways.
If developers didn’t think they could make the wheel better, we wouldn’t have C++, and wouldn’t have Java. We wouldn’t have lambdas, annotations, and other syntactical sugar that makes developing simpler. We wouldn’t have XML and wouldn’t have JSON format for sending data in descriptive and concise ways that are human readable. We wouldn’t consider best practices and make choices in development that make more reliable systems such as DRY principles. We might not be able to compete with other companies because they are leveraging the power of work that has already been completed in the open source community.
There are great things about the many tools available because people see a problem with the current tools, and they find a way to improve them. The entire development community can benefit.
The Bad
Throughout my career I have seen and even been a part of working on the next new type of frameworks. I have seen multiple technologies that are similar and follow a similar need. If I were a building architect I would liken this to focusing so much on material science or how one room is laid out that I would not really ever design the entire building.
In development there is a lot of things that can annoy other developers. Whether someone uses tabs or spaces like in the HBO show Silicon Valley. While following a standard is a good thing, sometimes getting too caught up in the details can cause political strife within an organization. As it was said to me “You can be right or happy”. This highlights the bad in overly strict processes. Further people that think they are right can be polarized, such that small things become big things.
A while back in a cafeteria I used to go to I think the dishwasher was broken one day. All the glasses looked like they had some soap scum on them. While I looked for a clean glass to no avail, another guy walked up picked up a glass and looked at me and said “Nothings perfect in life”. Development should be considered the same way and it is important to choose battles wisely.
The more open source projects a person or an organization uses the more potential they have for leveraging those projects and also being leveraged as they do not have complete visibility into the code base. Ideally smart people would be checking these code bases consistently to make sure they are secure and not introducing any malicious code into the system. This might not always be the case.
The amount of information, frameworks, and open source projects out there is daunting. Understanding all of them could waste a lot of time. Organizations are very susceptible to politics within the industry and many times things will be done because that is what is expected and not because that is necessarily the best way to do things. Political processes shape development and which technology sets we use.
Some organizations favor reuse so they spend money building their infrastructure in a certain technology. Projects using that technology are simpler to start because they have spent money building libraries for a technology like Java or C# or PHP etc. So the organization becomes polarized to particular technologies and might have less or no projects of the other technologies. Developers concerns are at times orthogonal to the organizations. They need to keep their skillsets up and work on the latest technologies so they are ready for the next big trends.
Developers have political tools as well as business people have political tools. From a developer standpoint I understand wanting to do things right and the argument that if things are not done right we will pay that in maintenance costs later, technical debt. Understanding the business point of view also they know that this project might give way to something else one year down the line. So they might care more about getting things done than making sure everything is completed perfectly.
Both sides could actually use these political arguments in negative ways to destroy projects they don’t like. If a developer wanted to see a project fail because they have a vendetta against an organization they could make the organization get so tied up in best practices and red tape that they never get anything done. Vice versa if a business person wanted to destroy a team they could prevent developers from taking the time they need to properly prepare the system and then use that as leverage to get them fired or divert funding to another group.
We all have to believe each other is working for the best interest of the company and the projects. There is a lot of reasons to do so, the company is paying them to do so and their career and trustworthiness within the industry hinges on this. Other companies incentivizing, greed, jealousy, and other motivations known and unknown can entice people to act in ways that are not in the best interest of the company.
Anyone starting their own company really should have this realization. I wish ideally we would all work to each others best interest but that is not always the case. We live in a world of human nature. Important to remember that everyone telling you about the next big things or which technologies you want to work with might not be on the level. Important for leaders to do their due diligence though a certain level of trust is necessary to ever get anything done.
Understand that every person that is added to an organization adds complexity. Ideally each person added creates a win for the company, a win for the person, and a win for society. This is not always the case. Some people that are hired have health problems, are emotionally torn up, or have other problems that are out of control of the company or even the person themselves at times. Competition is a good thing and results and profits matter to a companies well being. It would be ideal that we can help society and not leave people hurting as well. Finding that balance is not always easy, especially competing on an increasingly global market. The combination of these problems creates friction and considering all the variables it is very difficult to optimize alone. Some decisions that can be best for a group aren’t necessarily best for an individual so mercy and compassion are needed for those that can be hurt by those decisions.
Conclusion
Basics of what I am getting at here is that development has aspects outside of pure technology and whether the best product wins. A company that does great PR work might get the business instead of a company with a better product. Important to remember there is also ways for people to introduce concepts that work like an infinite loop wasting time and bringing a corporate engine to a standstill on efficiency. This might be more obvious at a corporate level, but this can be done to individuals as well. Understanding concepts and new technologies is important, just don’t let the abstractions prevent you from achieving your dreams.
If I were to judge two projects, one that uses lots of frameworks and best practices, and one that spent all the time on that building functionality for the business requirement which would I choose? Both show hard work, both are valuable. If a project is built out of a good set of frameworks it could be a spring board for leveraging the project in a team friendly way. If the other project completed all the business requirements yet missed some best practices, I might lean towards that project while still having the developers go back and refine the code so there isn’t a maintenance penalty later. There is definitely a balance, and mistakes will be made, just don’t let someone get you so caught up in the exact details that you never get anything done.
Bigger team sizes can be more difficult to manage and make sure developers are working efficiently. Having multiple architects or leads can help enable the developers on the team. In situations where there is only one architect or lead for a large group of developers that person’s schedule can be taxed to the point they can no longer efficiently review what is happening or properly enable the group to be efficient.
From what I have seen in the industry there should probably be one lead developer per 5 developers. With great DevOp processes, automated testing, and continuous integration this number could possibly be increased. Though in my experience I really haven’t been at an organization where all this is perfect yet, many organizations are moving that direction but are not there yet. Again the pursuit of perfection is admirable, DevOps is important and can help positive change in organizations. Don’t let the pursuit of best practices bring the primary pursuit of the company to a standstill.
The same could be likened to the US government, process and regulation is important as well as a competitive market place to help make sure those regulations are properly funded. I like clean water and I like being able to pay rent.
