The Word Promise

Trust is important.  I promise to add 2+2.

2+2=4

I have followed through on a promise.  Following through on a promise builds trust.

Further

1+3=4

1.5+2.5=4

I have given more iterations that rebuild trust, verify my promise to add 2+2.

It seems like a small thing, but promises kept overtime add up.  Trustworthy and consistent data, value added over time adds up.

Where people get into trouble is they make big lofty and ambitious problems.  Go big or go home.  If someone says I promise to fix World Peace, World Hunger, make everyone’s life better in new and profound ways each everyday for the rest of their life, this is where one might get in trouble.  They mean well, yet they set a bar so high that it is almost impossible to achieve, and inevitably, when non ideals and life comes into play, they fall short of that ideal.

Falling short of that ideal is consequential, it might erode trust in what was given freely before.  People don’t want to feel naive, like a doormat, like their good nature can be abused time and time again.

It is possible to sell people with a promise.  Yet it seems easy to break promises, fall short of promises, feel like the word promise is a less useful system, prone to errors and non ideals – that aren’t all truth.

Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?  Or so help you “In God We Trust” – like on a $1 bill?

Support factors into capacity to tell the truth.  If one has a phone, they can post truth, to a blog, or send an email.  If one has less money, they may have no phone, be stuck in a corrupt system under erroneous data.

We like to think of the support you have, what you have, doesn’t factor into a person’s capacity to tell the truth, give clarity.  Yet less health problems might equal less forgetful.  Greater trust is a design choice, a greater design choice that has to be made deliberately, with due diligence, with careful thought and consideration.  Trust is a signal we amp, a signal based upon support, an amplifier based upon support.

Do you promise not to turn professionals into misers by insufficiently designing a system that inspires more trust?
