From metaphors to juxtaposition Literary Devices are Powerful Tools for a writer’s arsenal, able to use them effectively requires knowing in what situations they have the potential to be useful, how they factor into interesting, different, and unique that leads to Key Details remembered versus forgotten.
Metaphors
Metaphors help the reader or listener feel, create new connections that can amplify imagination and details in perceivable, comprehensible lights. Having the audience feel raises relevance of details, helps the reader to relate on a topic that might be harder with a less effective tool. Metaphors create connections. Connections, like ones on diagrams or graphs are relevant, memorable, useful for grouping, create groupings that might not exist without metaphors. A is B can lead to seeing a page with A, B, C, and D with 3 groups instead of 4.
Metaphors are inspirational.
Metaphors are useful for descriptive, immersive writing, for transporting the reader to new dimensions that allow them to feel and perceive details they might otherwise miss. Breathing life into things that are not alive creates character. A wind that whispers or a mountain that dances on the horizon is different, potentially more memorable than the wind was full of air and the mountain is tall.

The Writer that inspires a more attentive audience, an audience more likely to perceive and remember key details has more potential for getting their theme and message across. Foreshadowing and Symbolism are powerful tools for inspiring a more attentive audience, like firing a flare gun into the air to grab focus, to make readers realize the story is In Motion, Pay Attention.
Diction and Subtext
Characters that are relatable are interesting. Characters sometimes speak in the kings court in exceptionally proper ways, but negate they always speak in the kings court. Relatable speech and dialogue factors into believable, believable leads to more ability to be immersed in the story. Story has the potential to be obtrusive, weird shaped parts that don’t or rarely fit together, and are not always believable when the writer tries to fit them together, or they can be like a master orchestra that chimes in at the perfect times, ramp ups of dissonance and resonance all masterfully orchestrated with proper timing.
Simple, Charming, and Relatable Characters that the audience are inspired to care about inspire investment from the reader, investment that can factor into a book read or put down a couple pages in. Simple and Charming characters we care about can factor into feeling of interesting and Epic. Epic in a way that allows complex and intricate plots and worlds to be woven that might be less inspiring with no relatable characters invested in them.
A planet from a far off galaxy sounds cool, 100 pages of just describing the planet might deliver less than desirable results. Venturing through the planet with relatable characters that might say something we might when confronted with colossal buildings, or storms that turn the day to midnight has the potential for higher value added.
A cute little dog the readers are inspired to love now with a Vicious Colossal Storm that turns the Day to Midnight brewing and bellowing on the horizon? Don’t hurt the puppy is a thought that can’t be inspired? Is a thought that isn’t useful to inspire?
Cliffhangers
Open questions and story lines can inspire thought, can generate hype that might not otherwise exist. Could potentially be like a temperature gauge to see what the reader and audience values. If enough care about the questions, the open unanswered questions, then time, money, and resources are more likely to be invested in more story. Writers have potential through cliffhangers to inspire more investment and they have motivation to do so.
A masterfully delivered story with that one part of the plot left unresolved? That dissonance just sitting in the back of the mind of the reader with a foreshadowed event at the conclusion? You know the one.
Imagery and Descriptive Writing
Just a palace or a magnificent palace with emerald windows and giant towers that’s torch light filled the city with a warming glow that made the citizens feel protected, hopeful, and encouraged with each new day’s light?
Vivid Verbs can be more dramatic than adverbs. The man spoke. The man spoke loudly “Never Say Die!” or, the man shouted “Never Say Die!”. Spoke loudly seems more wobbly unfitting and precarious than shouted. Vivid verbs have potential to be more concise and pack a higher power punch for writers than adverbs that generate feelings of matched incorrectly for the task at hand.
Precise Adjectives raise special details, details that might otherwise not be heard or thought of by the reader. The blue velvet drapes gives color and texture where as if the writer just wrote, they closed the drapes the reader might think of pink drapes or orange drapes. Notable juxtaposition with potentially more strange (who has orange drapes) has potential to be more memorable, unique. Highlighting unique details can give the readers imagination more to work with, can lead to more direction for those painting pictures for the story or for those making a movie based upon the story.
Descriptive and more combinations of details has potential to lead to a more unique special picture, a more unique special experience that both inspires the imagination of the reader and makes the details more memorable. Blue Velvet Drapes that were soft as snow and vibrant a kittens fur, capitalizes on both color and texture, potentially a reference for sound for those that have had velvet drapes. Details raised in combination with great experience can lead to memorable, has potential for appreciated yet not always as memorable. Plot Twists
Unexpected has the potential to be unique and interesting. A plot twist done wrong can lead to feelings of robbed experience, story or narrative shifted in unbelievable undesirable way that limits experience severely. A Plot Twist viewed as Epic takes strategy, needs to be believable and needs to reward the reader listener for being invested in the story versus wiping everything they have just spent their time on to nill.
Allegory
Stories can be meta. There can be story about a story about a story about a story. Story within a story can highlight important themes, can convey complex topic in short times that might otherwise be hard to rely upon as known by the reader.
Potential for Allegory to be useful as Allusion. A writer that might write a short story might allude to that story several times, capitalizing on their own reference or the reference of others to heighten the relevance of both the current story and the story alluded to for allegory.
The reader able to pick up and value a theme, to be able to comprehend swiftly complex topics is useful. Allegory can potentially foreshadow a writers reasoning and thought processes, ways of writing a story in a way that can heighten the readers appreciation when they read the bigger longer story. Insight into the writers mind and way of architecting story elements might not always be a given.
Allegory can teach key lessons, help reiterate relevant details in other lights, re-magnifying them using repetition and greater surface area for thought.
Allegory is important information the writer wants to convey. Going through the process of adding representations and shorter narratives to convey complex topics is Comprehension Amplification with purpose. The writer is making a non null investment in a tenor, a concept important for the reader to comprehend and attaching it to a vehicle (a narrative or piece of art potentially symbolism or metaphors) used to represent that concept in an interesting, comprehensible, and memorable way.
If the writer is going through effort required to create a tenor and a vehicle and use allegory they likely care about the topic, and are invested in getting the concept, message, theme conveyed in a memorable and unique way. Mankind had slavery in the past. I would like to think mankind is past that yet today we still have issues with oppression and have to watch out for child labor, oppressive illegal immigration that might be capitalized on by less ethical companies. Mankind to Humanize and value people is important to inspire and reiterate, to keep active on people’s minds because human life valued, Humanity Free and Inspired factors into a Better Future for us All.
If I was a white man from England in the early 1800s would I have the ability to speak out about oppression and slavery in the USA? Questionable to think just because things weren’t always spoken or written does not equal they were likely never thought. Oppressive environments have had a tendency for being amplified in history in ways that have lead to less people speaking up in ways that actually lead to game changing effects that actually, practically reduce oppression.
Oppression can be limited early on by strong voices or has potential to lead to out of control momentum, propaganda that might be hard to combat that can lead to atrocities built on mass appeal that is hard to fight against, that is less convenient to fight against, that might be very costly to fight against.
