Forward sometimes means agree, sometimes means disagree. Backward sometimes means agree, sometimes means disagree.
We set representation to ideals, is ideal value at times yet representation changes based upon context, and we generally don’t maintain ideal representation.
If someone picks you for a team, if you move forward, you are agreeing. If you move backwards you are also potentially giving that team a blank check, agreement by divesting. Representation is less than ideal, representation that is less than ideal factors into your capacity to defend self, and that representation is unlikely to be turned up ideally by self or others.
If I step backwards, I might be allowing someone to keep speaking, keep moving forward with their actions – by going backwards I am agreeing, divesting from control of stopping them. If I move forward, speak up, voice concerns I might be disagreeing, stopping their momentum forward.
Using the word right to establish agreement, correct, factual has potential for problematic given things are sometimes on the right, and looking from another direction sometimes on the left.

Is there no avenue for progression where agree/disagree does not always equal forward/backward motions? Example: I agree and allow movement forward for the other to prevent either going backward. Or I disagree and stay stationary preventing any movement backwards. Do these avenues not exist if both are communicating intent with honesty?
Abstract Topic, here are my thoughts – Valid points forward, or backwards might be associated with positive and negative connotations that amplify with less-than-ideal representation. Standing still does not equate to others moving forward or backwards, though might be comprehended and represented as such. In the center, not leaning to right (associated with correct at times) or left also has potential for misrepresentation. Win wins, compromise where people don’t appear as if moving backwards, losing ground might factor into capacity to protect self, and capacity to protect self amplifies less than ideally thus might be worthy of turning up such as by maintaining appearance of not moving backwards, and at the same time not giving ground to agreement.
