Notes on Cerebral Cortex from Nonexpert

Disclaimer: I (the writer of this vlog not the one on the video) am not a Doctor on Expert in Anatomy. I provide my notes freely as I am trying to learn

Cerebral Cortex

4 Lobes FPTOFrontal Lobe, Parietal, Temporal Lobe, Occipital Lobe

Large Amount of Gray Matter – Neurons primarily with Dendrites used for receiving and Neurons for processing signals (Afferent Input AIn)

Longitudinal Fissure – separates the brain into two hemispheres

Primary Cortexes always have Association Cortex (Primary Motor Cortex Frontal Lobe connected to Motor Association Cortex Frontal Lobe FL-PMC → FL-MAC, Primary Somatosensory Cortex Parietal Lobe connects to Somatosensory Association Cortex Parietal Lobe PL-PSC → PL-SAC, Primary Auditory Cortex Temporal Lobe connected to Auditory Association Cortex Temporal Lobe TL-PAC → TL-AAC, Primary Visual Cortex Occipital Lobe connected to Visual Association Cortex Occipital Lobe OL-PVC → OL-VAC)

Corpus Callosum – connecting White Matter Tracts Neuron Axons between two hemispheres of the brain

Sulcuses – FL-CSulc-PL, PL-LSulc-TL, PL-POSulc-OL

  1. Between Frontal Lobe and Parietal Lobe – Central Sulcus
  2. Between Parietal Lobe and Temporal Lobe – Lateral Sulcus (Silvian Fissure)
  3. Between Parietal Lobe and Occipital Lobe – Parieto-Occipital Sulcus

Preoccipital notch

1. Frontal Lobe FPTO

PMC – Primary Motor Cortex

  • Voluntary Movement

MAC – Motor Association Cortex (Premotor & Supplementary Motor Cortex)

  • Planning of Movement
  • Sequencing of Movement
  • Execution of Movement

FEF – Frontal Eyefields

  • Voluntary Eye Movement

PFC – Prefrontal Cortex

  • Memory
  • Learning
  • Personality/Behavior
  • Decision Making
  • Motor Planning

BA – Broca’s Area

  • Left side of brain in 95% of people
  • Motor functions that have to do with Speech

— Central Sulcus FL-CSulc-PL —

2. Parietal Lobe FPTO

PSC – Primary Somatosensory Cortex

Awarness of Somatic Sensations, touch, pressure, vibration

SAC – Somatosensory Association Cortex

  • Analyze Somatic Sensations
  • Recogition of Somatic Sensations (Pattern Matching)

PAA – Posterior Association Area

  • Multimodal Association Area
  • Visual Pathway, Auditory Pathway, and Sensory Pathway Combine

— Lateral Sulcus PL-LSulc-TL —

3. Temporal Lobe FPTO

PAC – Primary Auditory Cortex

  • Awareness of Sound
  • pitch
  • frequency
  • location

AAC – Auditory Association Cortex

  • analyzes Sound
  • recognizes Sound

WA – Wernicke’s Area

  • Language Comprehension
  • Listening (speech that is heard), Reading, and Writing

POC – Primary Olfactory Cortex

  • Awareness of Smell

— Parieto-Occipital Sulcus PL-POSulc-OL —

4. Occipital Lobe

PVC – Primary Visual Cortex

  • Awareness of Vision

VAC – Visual Association Cortex

  • Analyzes Visual Stimulus (Color, Angles)
  • Recognize Visual Stimulus (Pattern Matching)

——-

Insula (beneath Lateral Sulcus)

  • Gustation (Taste)
  • Visceral Sensations (Gut, Indigestion)
  • Vestibular Sensation (Head nodding)

Again I am the writer poster, not the makers of these videos, I provide because I think they will be useful.
